                              The History of Fort Miles
Fort Miles was built in 1968 by Nelson Miles and Rosemary Swanson Miles. Nelson was the son of General Sherman Miles, who captured Puerto Rico for America. Rosemary was a New England heir to the Swanson food company. Following a decade of world travel to off-the-beaten-path places, this unique couple chose St, John as their home.

As the first landowners and homebuilders on Maria Bluff, they selected the site with the best view and aerodynamic qualities. The Miles engaged a prominent New York architectural firm to create a sophisticated New England style in a Caribbean setting.

The estate was designed in true West Indian fashion with separate living and sleeping houses. The bedroom wing is situated to capture Trade Winds for sleeping comfort. Between the two houses are lush gardens, a large pool and huge decks. The pool and deck are totally private thanks to a natural rock mountain abundantly planted with wild orchids and other botanicals.
